A Pig That You Should Always Feed

Most of us had our own childhood experience of storing coins in our fragile Piggy Banks (alkansya). Noong ako'y mosmos pa lamang, my piggy bank was an empty can of Pringles (potato chips) until my parents bought me an alkansya with cartoon characters printed on it. I also owned alkansyang kawayan, bao, bote, at kahit anong pwedeng mapaglagyan ng coins ng hindi mo basta basta mabubuksan.

My mother was lenient in the concept of saving since she's an accountant and I was taught at early age to save for the future. My mother also comes up a contest that who will saves more before the christmas, she will grant and buy the things that we badly wanted. Who wants to lose? Bilang isang tusong nakababatang kapatid, minsan ay sinusungkit ko sa alkansya ng Ate at Kuya ko ang ipon nila then transfer the coins into my piggy bank. ☺ You know who wins...

And that means I need another piggy bank to fill even there is no more contest because my mother passed away when I was just 8 years of age.

Whithout a proper guidance of a mother, I become addicted on playing video games. Where on several unfateful days, sinusungkit ko ang mga ipon ko sa alkansya para makapaglaro lang ng video games. My piggy banks drained out and napunta na lahat ng mga na-ipon ko sa owner ng video games' store.

Setting aside my marvelous thrifty yet extravagant experience, the Piggy Bank is a great first step in teaching us how to save money. Take this scenario in an instance:

Let us say that you ride a jeepney to work every day and have a ₱20 back and forth budget, at ang pamasahe sa jeep ay ₱8. On this scenario, you have extra ₱4 everyday, so instead of buying candies or cigarette, you can then save your ₱4 sa iyong Piggy Bank. Do you know how much that gives you?

In a week, you get ₱20
In a month, you have ₱80
In a year, you have ₱960

Dahil lang sa hindi pagbili ng candy o sigarilyo, makakaipon ka ng ₱960 in a year. It might not be big enough, but it's a great start!

For fun, you can enact your own set of strict rules; in my part, I make it to the point of putting in the shiny ₱5 or ₱10 coins sa aking piggy bank. So kapag may nagsukli sakin ng makintab na limang piso or 10 peso coin, I didn't spend it.

And just got surprised how much I saved after na mapuno ko na ang Piggy Bank. I imagine that time will come and ilalagay ko sa baul (treasure chest) yong mga makikintab na coins na yon, then bring it to the bank costumed as pirates or treasure hunter to deposit.

The concept of the Piggy Bank has been with us ever since; you don't actually need it to be pig shaped. Way before 18th century, before piggy banks took its first "pig" shape, our Filipino ancestors saved extra money on modified dried coconut shell o bao, kawayan, banga (earth jar) at kahit sa haligi ng kanilang tahanan. This simple behavior modification would do you a lot of good in the near future. Start your own Piggy Bank today and you should constantly feeding that Pig.

"Kapag may isinuksok, may madudukot..."

And remember this, "The LACK of money is the root of all evil."

I really want to hear from you, kung may katanungan ka, suggestion or negative feedback about sa blog post na ito, I'll be more than happy to learn from it and I'll get back to you as soon as I can...
