Get a Push!

Have you been in a situation where you felt like you fell into a river of raging problems?
Your relationship with your family aren't good.
There are setbacks at your work, career or business. 
You are financially struggling. 
Big companies are after you - electricity, water, mortgage, telephone, tuition fees and more bills due!
The troubles are dragging you down and you are pulling yourself up. You've tried to grasp on anything. And did everything with your all-being to push yourself from the river, but you still can't!

Because there's not enough to hold on to. You lack the ability and resources. You felt alone and helpless but then you still go on with your will. You never gave up until someone came to help!

The help this elephant got from a peer, in the following video, is greater than what some humans would give to another human. This is something we can all learn from.

Animals aren't all dumb after all, huh!?

Before I give you what this video told me, I have this story of the three basket of crabs: American crabs, European crabs and Philippine crabs.

One day, I went to a wet market with a friend to buy crabs and noticed three baskets of crabs from different countries. Each basket is almost full of living crabs. But the two are covered, while to the basket containing Philippine crabs is not.

We were curious, so we asked the vendor, "Ale, why is it that the two baskets are covered, while that with Philippine crabs is not?"

The Tindera replied, "Oh, that prevents them from escaping. Well, as for the Philippine crabs, we don't really need it to be covered. Because when one tries to push itself out of the basket to escape, the other crabs below pull them down."

This is a bad image for us Filipinos. The crab mentality. We envy those that are succeeding, so we pull them down because we don't want them to leave us below.

But I believe crab-mentality isn't just for Filipinos. One of its source is envy. Envy is an ancient problem. Because of envy, Cain killed his brother Abel. Anyways, that's a different story. I just want to imply that instead of pulling somebody down, let us push someone up. 
Let's go back to what the video told me and how God spoke to me.

Let's call the bigger one Dumbo and the little one Bambi. Yes, those are actually names of elephant in a cartoon show.

Like the little elephant, there are times in our lives that we can't push ourselves up. But soon, just show yourself that you need help and there will be someone out there - bigger and above us - willing to give us a hand.

But hey! Look what the bigger elephant did. At first, it watches from afar. Observing?

The little one walks away, looks stressed and about to give up. But then goes back and tries again.

Then the Dumbo slowly came near. Standing closely. They seem to be talking until Bambi tried to climb up again. Maybe Dumbo stands there just to give some moral support and encourage Bambi with a growling cheer, "I'm here for you! Try it again! Push it more! You can do it! Wohooooo!"

Obviously, Bambi really can't climb up because her legs are short.

So Dumbo goes down into the river with Bambi. The little one stepped aside and tried to climb up again. Then Dumbo pushed Bambi up. And they're up happily ever after!

What inspired me here is that the bigger elephant may just pull the little one up. Stay up and offer its trunk so that Bambi can grasp it and let the little one pull herself up. Instead, Dumbo went down with Bambi and it pushed the little elephant up. An act of humbleness or humility! 

Strong people don't put others down, they lift them up.

Because there is no exercise better for the heart than reaching down and lifting people up.

Leaders! May this spoke to you that true leaders understand that leadership is not about yourself but about those you serve. It is not about exalting yourself but about lifting others up. We rise by lifting others!

I am always inspired knowing employees that are now managers, climbed up the corporate ladder from being a lower level worker. Moved by stories of successful people that has been from rags to riches. Motivated to those iconic entrepreneurs and philanthropist.

Why? Who will not!?

Like the big elephant in the video. We know that Dumbo was little before. He might have been in that situation before and he wanted Bambi to learn a lesson. So instead of coming fast to help; Dumbo watched from afar, observed and let Bambi strive to work her way up.

Like God, He is faithful to us. God loves us. That's why He is more concerned with our growth than our comfort. God does not punish. Instead, He allows us to experience the consequences of our actions so that we may grow. He is never late. He is always on time. You might just give up when God was about to answer you.

So when Dumbo recognized that Bambi really needs help that time, he slowly came near. But you see, Dumbo stayed close and seemed to encourage her.

God believes in you. His love is strong enough to stand beside us through the pain because He believes in our capacity to grow and overcome.

But when Dumbo saw that Bambi really can't make it out with herself with his encouragements and cheers, he came down and pushed Bambi up. An act of humility that we can all learn from.

Many of us have heard or are familiar with this famous line from John 3:16 that says, "for God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son..." God had to come down to our level and send Jesus to Earth. He is "Emmanuel," God who is with us. Jesus washed the feet of His disciples to model to us what it means to humble ourselves for others despite our stature in life. 

"I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you."

But here's another possible version of the last part of the story. When Dumbo is there standing near, Bambi prayed: "Lord, help me do my best and trust that You will do the rest. Amen!" This version don't need further explanation. It's to show that we should never give up, believe in ourselves and have faith that God can do the rest.

"For it is my Father's will that all who see his Son and believe in him should have eternal life. I will raise them up at the last day."
- John 6:40(NLT)"

In our secular life. If our Boss has been from zero to get to where they are now; trust that even though they seem to be not doing something and just watching you from afar, they will surely come to help you if you just ask. Let them see that you are doing your best and surely they will also lift you up. Because they've been there. They understand that they won't be in their position now without someone that helped them in the past. They are just waiting for the right time and right people to pay it forward.

All you need is to ask and Get a Push!
