The Boiling Frog Syndrome

One of the biggest regrets I always have is not stepping up to stop any dysfunction or ineffective decision on a tricky situation.

I'm in doubt if I had the skills. I'm not sure that I thought it was my job. Will they listen to me? At one point, the trust was so low, I’m not sure that I cared enough. Until I did nothing and just gone with the flow. Which eventually resulted to an undesirable consequences.

So what does this have to do with boiling a frog?

There is a fascinating early 19th century science experiments. Researchers found that when they put a frog in a pan of boiling water, the frog just quickly jumped out.

On the other hand, put a frog in a pan of cold water then start heating the water slowly.

As the temperature of the water rises, the frog is able to adjust its body temperature accordingly.

The frog keeps on adjusting with increase in temperature.

Just when the water is about to reach boiling point, the frog is not able to adjust anymore.

At that point the frog decides to jump out...

The frog tries to jump but is unable to do so, because it has lost all its strength in adjusting with the rising water temperature...

Very soon the frog dies.

What killed the frog?

Many of us would say the boiling water...

But the truth is what killed the frog was its own inability to decide when it had to jump out.

It can be relate to many of us that can't be man enough, stand up, or voice out to save a delicate status.

We all need to adjust with people and situations, but we need to be sure when we need to adjust and when we need to confront or face a futile circumstances.

Often the lack of trust and engagement creeps up on us. We don’t even feel it coming. We just know something isn't right.  Often we’re not sure what to do about it. We’re not even sure whether it’s our job or responsibility to do something about it.

My goal here is to share what I learned and hopefully prevent you on having the same regrets I have had.

There are times when we need to face the situation and take the appropriate action...

If we allow situations or people to exploit us physically, mentally, emotionally or financially, they will continue to do so...

We have to decide when to jump.

Let us jump while we still have the strength.

Because if you just go with the flow and the situation get worst, regrets will hunts you for not doing the things you can do when you have the opportunity to do it.

Be a man. Stand up. Voice it out! You might save the other boiling frogs in the pot.

I hope this inspires you to take some action and save some frogs in the process. We’ll all be glad you did.

Note: While the results of the boiling frog experiment are in questions, it is a good metaphor for many circumstances such as a caution for people to be aware of even gradual change lest they suffer eventual undesirable consequences.

  1. The boiling frog story is generally offered as a metaphor cautioning people to be aware of even gradual change lest they suffer eventual undesirable consequences. It may be invoked in support of a slippery slope argument as a caution against creeping normality. It is also used in business to reinforce that change needs to be gradual to be accepted. Oppositely, the expression "boiling frog syndrome" is sometimes used as shorthand to invoke the pitfalls of standing pat.
